Best and safest way to travel to Tarija?

by JJDallas

I am considering traveling to Bolivia very soon from the U.S. with my wife. My destination is Tarija. Can you give me advice as to the most economical/safest route to arrive there. I do not know which airport I should fly into (La Paz, Santa Cruz, etc) and how to travel to Tarija from there.

Thank you !!

Trip to Tarija

I've never actually done the trip, but I've wanted to for a while. My suggestion is to either bus or fly from Santa Cruz. I know that a local airline, AeroCon, has daily flights to Tarija from Santa Cruz. You can check their website for more information. www.aerocon.bo. There is another airline that also probably does the flight. It is called BOA. You can check their website, too. www.boa.bo.

You can also bus from Santa Cruz to Tarija. It would be substantially cheaper, but longer (a day). One advantage to taking the bus is the cost of excess luggage. Not sure how much you plan to pack, but the small planes don't have a very large luggage allowance (20 kg) Bus travel is, of course, more susceptible to political unrest, so it is wise to keep an eye on the news for the days leading up to your travel.

Whether you bus or fly, you can generally make travel arrangements very close to the day of your travel, or even on the day of your travel. This is especially true of bus travel. So if you arrive to Santa Cruz, you could check out your options and then decide. Hope this helps!

Travel to Tarija
by: Rebeca

Hello JJDallas,
Tarija is a beautiful place to visit.
The best and the cheapest way to get there is by plane from Santa Cruz. La paz is a little far and sometimes planes stop over other cities before getting Tarija.
Any questions please comment, Regards
