Sandboarding is one of the most recent tourist attractions available in Santa Cruz, Bolivia at the famous Lomas de Arena. Sand dunes are the last thing you'd expect to find in the middle of the jungle. The sand dunes are located about 17 kilometers (10 miles) from the city of Santa Cruz. The area in which they are found was declared a protected area that covers about 13,454 Km2 (5194 square miles).

In addition to sand dunes and a seasonal lagoon that forms during the rainy season, there are over 200 species of birds and wildlife that you can see throughout the year. It's a great place to do birdwatching for unusual, tropical species, some of which are migratory. There is very little infrastructure and you should take water, snacks, sunglasses, insect repellent and sunblock. Camping is allowed, but hunting, fishing and fires are not.
