Can I get to Samaipata from La Paz without going through Santa Cruz?

You could go via Cochabamba. Its about 7/8 hours from La Paz to Cochabamba. Then pick up a bus towards Santa Cruz that passes through Vallegrande and on to Samaipata (around 10 hours). I think there are only 2 or 3 of these buses a week that travel on this route (there is a newer road that by passes Samaipata and more buses use this route.) The bus would drop you off on the main road and you could take a taxi the last mile or so into the centre of Samaipata.
You could also go via Sucre - a longer journey but more buses.
