Traditional Bolivian Christmas Recipes: Cola de Mono (Eggnog)

by Alura Gonzales
(Santa Cruz, Bolivia)

Cola de Mono is a traditional Christmas drink in Bolivia, similar to eggnog in that is has a thick, sweet texture. However, while the primary ingredient of eggnog is eggs, in Cola de Mono (which quite literally means "monkey's tail") adding eggs is optional. Its flavor is quite similar to that of a White Russian.

Ingredients:

1 can of condensed milk
1 small vanilla stick (or 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract)
3 or 4 cloves
3 teaspoons instant coffee
1 cup hot water
Any alcoholic beverage (could be brandy)

Preparation:

Open the can of condensed milk and mix it with 2 1/2 cups of water, add vanilla, cloves and boil it about 3 or 4 minutes.

Remove from heat, strain and add instant coffee previously dissolved in very little hot water, stir and let cool. Add the brandy and serve chilled.

Note: If desired, add 2 or 3 egg yolks after removing it from heat, whisking vigorously.
