Philippines citizens do not need a visa to travel to Bolivia
by: BoliviaBella.com

Apparently citizens of the Philippines do not need a visa to travel to Bolivia. According to the website of the Bolivia Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Philippine citizens are listed in GROUP 1, which is the group of countries that do not need a visa to enter the country. Here is the page where you can see that.

what to do when there is no bolivian consulate near you

This is in response to "No consulate near me by: Anonymous" who said:

I'm from Syria and I'm holding UAE resident visa, they told me i need specific purpose visa, and there is no consulates near UAE, so what can i do? can i get the visa upon arrival, because there is no problem about getting the Cancilleria permission and all the specif purpose visa requirements

Regardless of which passport (Syria or UAE) you are traveling on, if you plan to apply for residency in Bolivia you have to arrive on a specific purpose visa (visa de objeto determinado). The Cancilleria here in Santa Cruz Bolivia recently told me, in response to someone who had a similar problem with no nearby consulate), that you can use ANY Bolivian consulate in any country near to you.

Try www.embassiesabroad.com to find one near you.

by: BoliviaBella

It depends which country you are from. See our Visa information page and check to see if you are in Group 1, 2 or 3. Each group is a list of countries. This tells you, depending on your country of origin, whether or not you need a visa and if you must get it prior to arrival or can just get it upon arrival.

By the way if you are just traveling or touring you can come on a tourist visa but if you plan to move here to live or work you MUST come on a "Visa de Objeto Determinado".

The government is pretty strict about Americans entering with a tourist visa appropriately requested PRIOR to arrival. There are stories of exceptions having been made, but there are also stories of people being detained and returned to the U.S. It's a risk to arrive without the visa.

US citizen tourist visa on arrival

I am flying to Bolivia tomorrow as a tourist. I have all the documents in order (round trip ticket, passport with more than 6 month validity, hotel reservation, yellow fever vaccination), and the US Department of State website says you can apply for the tourist visa on arrival.

However, this link: https://www.boliviabella.com/american-visa-bolivia-bolivia-visa-requirements-bolivia-visa-application.html says you need the visa before you arrive.

I am concerned American Airlines won't let me board the flight without the visa stamp in my passport. Has anyone had this experience?

Yes, you are supposed to get the visa prior to traveling. However, there are a lot of people arriving without visas and some are reporting they are being given the visa upon arrival. Apparently because the Bolivian government has realized that not everyone is informed. Mostly this is happening at the borders. Haven't heard about whether or not they'll give you one at the airport. Probably, as long as you have all the requirements in order. Cost is $135.

Visa upon arrival at La Paz - Citizen of Malaysia

by Gracey
(Nassau, Bahamas)

Hi, I am a citizen of Malaysia which is categorized in Group 2. I have been asking around and received different feedback as to visa requirements. I would like to know if it is possible to obtain a tourist visa at La Paz airport? And if so, what are the fee and required documents? I am leaving in 2 weeks time so I don't have sufficient time to apply the visa from the consulate, which will take 10-25 business days. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

The Bolivian Consulate/Embassy in Washington DC has this website where you can see an online list of the things you were to have sent the consulate in order to get your visa from them.

Since you will be getting it at the airport, review the list to be sure you have everything with you when you fly. On their home page, click on the little link that says "Tourist VISA for United States Citizens".

p.s. A few little secret places to visit in La Paz plus the two best places to get photos of the city.

Bolivia visa at the airport
by: Anonymous

If the Bolivian consulate itself told you they don't have visas at this moment (it's an official sticker that is usually sent to them from Bolivia) then you probably won't have any problem getting one upon entry. Perhaps the Bolivian consulate could send you a letter (or at least an email) that you could print out and bring with you so you can feel more secure about not having problems at the airport. Why don't you call them and ask them if they'd be willing to do that for you. Just for your peace of mind. I'm not sure they'll say yes. It's just an idea.

tourist or resident
by: BoliviaBella

Are you coming as a tourist or are you moving here? Americans in either case are supposed to request their travel visas from a Bolivian consulate in the United States and obtain it prior to arriving here.

But, we hear that in some cases they are being given the tourist visa at the borders and at airports upon arrival - this is because so many people are arriving without visas, having had no knowledge they needed one.

However, if you are planning to apply for residency in Bolivia and you arrive without a visa, they'll issue you a tourist visa at the airport and you cannot apply for residency if you enter on a tourist visa. For residency you are supposed to enter on a "visa de objeto determinado" (which in English we call a specific purpose visa).

you will be charged at airport immigration
by: Anonymous

You will most likely be charged the visa late fee at immigration at the airport. After check-in you need to first pay the airport exit taxes (there are two of these taxes) and these you pay downstairs just across from the check-in counters. However, when you go upstairs and through security you will pass through airport immigration. This is where you may be charged your fines of Bs. 20 per day. Whether or not you are fined seems to sort of depend on the mood of the officials, however.

Visa on Arrival in Boliva: Easy to Get?

Hi, I am a US green card holder with Indian Passport planning on going to Bolivia for tourism. While all the websites say that I can get visa on arrival at port of entry (La Paz), the lady at the consulate scared me that there are chances that they might reject my application for visa on arrival. I was wondering if anybody knew how easy it is to get the visa on the spot; are they very strict about it? Also, what all documents are required for the application on arrival? Any quick response will be highly appreciated.
Thanks, Nitin

You don't need a letter of invitation for tourism
by: Anonymous

You don't need a letter of invitation if you are only coming as a tourist. By law, tourists can only remain in Bolivia on a tourist visa for a maximum of 90 days per calendar year.

If you are planning to stay longer, then you cannot enter on a tourist visa. You must enter on a specific purpose visa (which sometimes does require a letter of invitation) and request residency when you get here if you are not coming as a tourist.

But just for tourism, you don't need a letter of invitation.

You will get a 30 or 90 tourist Visa upon arrival, you have to mention that you need a tourist visa; in migration desk they might ask what activity you are coming to do, you explain that only for tourist purposes. If you want to stay longer than 90 days then you will need a special porpose visa, that it has to be obtained in advance.
For tourist visa you will need your passsport with at least 6 months of validity and a return flight ticket.
Have a good flight

El Salvador tourist visa information
by: Anonymous

The reason you hear different things is because citizens of different countries are bound to different rules, depending upon the agreements that exist between Bolivia and other countries.

Bolivia has divided the countries into 3 visa groups. El Salvador is in Group II, countries that DO need a tourist visa, but are NOT obligated to obtain one prior to arrival. You will be given your tourist visa when you arrive.

You can see the Group II list here:

If I am from Ghana will I get a tourist visa to Bolivia on arrival?

by Francis Dzameshie
(Ghana)

I am a Ghanaian and want to visit Bolivia.I read online that as a Ghanaian I can get a tourist visa upon arrival.I just want to be sure if this is true.I don't want to get to the airport and be sent back home for misinformation. I would be very happy if you can confirm that what I read on line about being able to get visa on arrival is the actual truth.
Thank you.

Getting Tourist Visa on arrival at airport without Yellow Fever Certificate

We are thinking of arriving in the Santa Cruz airport and getting our tourist visa on arrival. Anyone know what has been happening in this particular airport (VVI) if you don't have the Yellow Fever Certificate?

yellow fever certificate in santa cruz
by: BoliviaBella

Santa Cruz is one of the regions of Bolivia that definitely requires the yellow fever certificate because it is a hot and humid region. Whether or not you can get it at the airport upon arrival is iffy. We've heard some people are being fined for not having their tourist visa upon arrival and others are being given the visa upon arrival.

Those who don't have the yellow fever shot are sometimes being asked to get it here upon arrival and are being administered the shot at the land border entry points, but I'm not sure how that is being handled at the airport.

Is it possible to obtain visa on arrival at La Paz airport for US citizens?

I was about to purchase a ticket to Bolivia a week from now, from Colombia where I am currently traveling, and just realized that US citizens need a visa!! Can anyone tell me what the CURRENT rules are about obtaining the visa upon arrival at the airport, as long as I have all of the proper documentation? Everything I am reading is so confusing....

Thank you!

How long does it take to get my visa in Lima?
by: Anonymous

Thanks for the replies! I am still planning on heading to Bolivia, but now am thinking that I will try to obtain my visa ahead of time, in Lima. Does anyone know how long it might take to get that done? Also, the Bolivian webpage is under construction. :(

Thanks again!

Getting tougher
by: David Boldt

We have known two recent cases of Americans not being allowed to board in the US because they lacked a visa, or, in one case, did not have all the needed documentation INCLUDING AN INVITATION OR PROOF OF A HOTEL RESERVATION. If you can get a visa, do so. Otherwise have everything on the list and be ready to do some fast talking in Spanish. You might check with your airline to be sure they will let you on if you don't have a visa. The airlines are often worse than the actual immigration officers. This is a change from the recent past. A few months ago all they wanted to see was the money (in cash and, to avoid delay, exact change).

US Citizen Visa for Bolivia
by: Carmen Mercado

Yes, if you are refering to a tourist visa you will be able to purchase a visa at the port of entry, for $135.00. Has to be in cash. The visa is for 5 years, and you can only stay in Bolivia for 3 months within 1 year. Your American passport has to be currant and not have an expiration date less than 6 months. For instance if you are traveling today, your visa cannot have an expiration date before March 6,2012. You can run into a problem.
I hope this helps

tourist visa upon arrival
by: Anonymous

The current rules state US citizens must obtain the tourist visa prior to travel. Having said that, there are travelers who've stated they are being given the visa at the border or airport upon arrival. Seems to be iffy and rather depend on the immigration officer's mood. Better to visit the Bolivian consulate in Colombia and get it prior to arrival if at all possible. Either way the cost is $135.

visa upon arrival for dual citizen
by: Anonymous

You might want to take your expired El Salvador passport with you just in case. It might help. I've heard there are so many Americans who don't know about the visa requirement that some have been given visas upon arrival. It seems to depend on the actual immigration official and how well you explain your situation. I would just tell them the truth. That you didn't know you needed a visa.

Your other option would be to call the Bolivian Consulate in Miami and ask them to please see if there is something they can do to help you solve this problem. From what I understand, they are now issuing visas within 48 hours anyways - so it might be possible.

Bolivian tourist visa for citizens of Malaysia
by: Anonymous

According to Bolivia's official government immigration website:

http://www.migracion.gob.bo/web (click on TRAMITES Y REQUISITOS, then click on PARA EXTRANJEROS, theN enter your nationality MALASIA) it says:

1. Visa de Turista Consular.

TRANSLATION:

This means you can get your tourist visa at the border. It will allow you to remain in Bolivia for 30 days. After those 30 days, you can renew it for 30 days at a time, twice, for a total of no more than 90 days in Bolivia in one calendar year. You are not allowed to work or earn money in Bolivia during that time.

Second paragraph states that IF there is no Bolivian consulate in your country, then you will be issued the tourist visa at the border or airport upon arrival. Happy travels!

Boliviana Visa

I travelled in March 2013, and paid 55 USD for the Boliviana visa. I travelled from Puno (Peru) to La Paz (Bolivia), and the bus stopped at the customs where I was able to obtain the visa at the border. No documents were needed besides my passport.

Thanks for the info. I was actually planning on taking a bus from Puno to La Paz. So I hope it is similar at the Peru-Bolivia border as well.

I'm still in the midst of application at the embassy just to be safe, but they ask for all sorts of documents which seems to be taking ages to obtain (certificate of good conduct, etc.), and some of these documents require a sworn translation to Spanish, which probably costs more than the payment of the 'tourist visa upon arrival'.

Group II visa
by: DJ

Yes, there was no problem getting the visa at the airport (we landed in La Paz). We had to pay 360 Bolivianos (around USD 52). There is an official sign listing the price for Group II countries, and the officials have a list of all Group II countries that they double-check. They ask that you pay in Bolivianos, but you can go out into the terminal to use the currency exchange or the ATM. All in all, very easy and pain-free. They didn't even ask for a photo or a filled in visa application form (but I would bring those things just in case, because you never know what immigration officer you might get). Hope that helps!

Visa upon arrival for Egyptian citizens

by Carla Andrea
(Kuwait)

Hello, I am a Bolivian, married with an Egyptian... we do not live in Bolivia either in Egypt.. we are expats moving in the world.

We try to go yearly to Bolivia so in the countries we were and we are right now (Kuwait - Middle East) we do not find Bolivian embassy.
The only one in the whole middle east is in Egypt.. but we run out of time.. we have work the trip go and back from Bolivia take 4 days.. so to go Egypt and make a visa and then finally go Bolivia is a real headache.. make us loose lots of time, patient and money, this situation sadly stopped us many times to go Bolivia.

So I'm wondering if you could clear our doubts, about "Making a visa upon arrival in the migrations offices of the airport" with out going to the embassy first.. and so on as my husband is Egyptian he belong to the group 2 so for what i read i understood that he could do it.. could make his visa upon arrival.. but we are scared they return us back..

We tried to apply for nationality, but the answer is that he must be resident in Bolivia for at least 1 year because we got married in Bolivia.
as this is not possible, we need to find other solution to enter legally to Bolivia, what could you advice us?

thank you alot!

According to the Bolivian Ministry of Foreign Relations website www.rree.gob.bo people in Group 2 don't need to get the visa prior to travel. They are given the visa upon arrival at the airport.

Maybe you would like to contact them to be sure:
