by Joel
(Oregon)

Do U.S. citizens need to have a visa before arriving in Bolivia, or can I get my visa once I arrive there in Santa Cruz?

Tourist visas on arrival in Santa Cruz
by: Anonymous

You can get a tourist visa on arrival in Santa Cruz now, but only do that if your trip is for less than 30 days. If you apply in the US for the tourist visa, they'll give you 90 days. When you get one on arrival, it's only valid for 30 days.

Requirements for the Bolivian tourist visa
by: Anonymous

This is what the LA Bolivian consulate website says:

VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR US CITIZEN

Travelers, who are US citizen or US Passport holders and are planning to visit Bolivia, must apply for a tourist VISA.

This entry VISA is valid for five (5) years since the issuing date and allows the holder 90 lay days per year. The traveler may apply it upon arrival to Bolivia; even if the trip is by bus or plane. The requirements are the following:

1.Fill and sign the Sworn Statement form.
2.Valid Passport for at least six (6) months, make sure there are available pages to stamp the VISA sticker.
3.One (1) picture, full color Passport size.
4.Hotel reservation’s copy, or invitation letter from relatives or friends including the city/address and staying period.
5.Flight ticket or the tour itinerary, simple copy.
6.Bank statement or Credit Card’s simple copy (you may erase the Account or Credit Card’s number).
7.The VISA fee is $ 160.00 (One hundred and sixty 00/100 US dollars).

VISA applications may be sent through regular mail, in that case a return pre-paid envelope is needed and the fee must be paid in Money Order to CONSULADO DE BOLIVIA.

Visa applications may be dropped off in our offices without an appointment taking two (2) business days and could be paid with a MONEY ORDER or Debit Card ATM.

IMPORTANT

The Consulate General of Bolivia in Los Angeles will not process any application incomplete and they will be returned without VISA. Make sure you fulfill all we request.

Americans are required a tourist visa
by: Anonymous

Americans are in Group 2, which means they have to acquire a tourist visa prior to arriving in Bolivia. You can do this at any Bolivian consulate in the United States. It doesn't take long. You just have to turn in the documents they require of you. The cost is about $160.

Visa at the Airport in Bolivia

by Wanderfirst
(US)

I'm a US citizen. I understand it's possible to get a Tourist Visa upon arrival in Bolivia.

Is it possible to obtain a Specific Purpose Visa at the La Paz Airport?

I don't live anywhere near a consulate and hesitate to mail my passport so this would be the best option. I also understand that it can be very difficult to change from a Tourist to a Specific purpose visa?

Get the tourist visa BEFORE arrival, unless you will be in Bolivia under 30 days
by: Anonymous

1. You can't get specific purpose visas at the airport.

2. If you enter as a tourist without any visa, you will get a tourist visa upon arrival, but it will be only for 30 days instead of the 90 days you get if you apply for the tourist visa in the US before traveling.

3. If you want to apply for residency, and you entered with a tourist visa (whether you got it before you arrived or at the airport) you will have to pay a heavy fine to void the tourist visa, buy a specific purpose visa in Bolivia (which isn't even supposed to be a thing but for money they'll do it) and then begin the application for residency. You end up with a lot of extra hassle, headaches and way more expense.

U.S. Tourist Visa on entry (need round trip ticket?)

by Michelle
(Knoxville, TN)

I'm worried about getting my U.S. tourist Visa in Bolivia. I am last minute, so not all my plans are set. I'm flying out tomorrow! I have all documents I should need to get the visa at the port of entry (La Paz), but I don't have a round-trip ticket. Does anyone know if U.S. Airway (or TACA from Lima) will give me problems for not having a visa prior to entry? and do I actually need to get a ticket home?
