Thanks for the info. I was actually planning on taking a bus from Puno to La Paz. So I hope it is similar at the Peru-Bolivia border as well.

I'm still in the midst of application at the embassy just to be safe, but they ask for all sorts of documents which seems to be taking ages to obtain (certificate of good conduct, etc.), and some of these documents require a sworn translation to Spanish, which probably costs more than the payment of the 'tourist visa upon arrival'.

Group II visa
by: DJ

Yes, there was no problem getting the visa at the airport (we landed in La Paz). We had to pay 360 Bolivianos (around USD 52). There is an official sign listing the price for Group II countries, and the officials have a list of all Group II countries that they double-check. They ask that you pay in Bolivianos, but you can go out into the terminal to use the currency exchange or the ATM. All in all, very easy and pain-free. They didn't even ask for a photo or a filled in visa application form (but I would bring those things just in case, because you never know what immigration officer you might get). Hope that helps!

Tourist Visa Group II
by: JL

Hi DJ, are you from country Group II? Were you able to apply for the tourist visa at the border itself (just with your passport)? Please share your experience. Thanks!

Sorry
by: Khung

Sorry, I haven't go yet. It will be 1 week later in my plan, and I am not sure whether I am going or not. I have no confident to go there alone after I got some feedback/information from some travellers that I meet who went Bolivia before.

Were you able to get your visa at the border?
by: DJ

Hi Khung,
Were you able to get your visa at the border in the end? I am in a similar situation (passport from Group II country - Bulgaria) and would welcome any information on your experience.

Thanks!

Hi, IF you can apply for TOURIST visa, you need a current passport only.
