Spanish Lessons in Tarija

by Martin
(Tarija, Bolivia)

Many people visiting Bolivia think that they can only take Spanish lessons in Sucre and overlook the benefits of coming to Tarija.

It is true that Sucre probably has the highest number of Spanish Schools of any Bolivian city. However at times the structure of the classes is too rigid and lacks the ability to provide the one-on-one help that many students need.

Language School Altiplano in Tarija offers personalised Spanish lessons tailored to the needs of each student.

Lessons can be arranged from a minimum of 2 hours a day and are tailored to the needs of each student. You simply tell us what you want and we arrange the classes.

Another benefit of Language School Altiplano is the teaching methods used. Instead of relying on books and handouts students are encouraged to listen and learn to speak Spanish, in just the same way that babies learn to speak. In this way you learn to speak like a native Spanish person.

Altiplano Spanish School - November 2011
by: James R

I attended the Altiplano Spanish School for just over 3 weeks in November 2011. I had previously spent a month in Sucre, also doing Spanish lessons there. My teacher was Naomi, and she was an effective, well qualified teacher. The school is well organised and Martin and Luisa are friendly and professional. I had chosen to come to Tarija for its slightly ´´off the beaten track´´ status, and found it nice and chilled out, and with plenty of opportunities for nice wekeends and day trips into the surrounding areas, in places to which other tourists more or less dont visit (search for Tarija on Lonely Planet forum for my posts on these). Of course, it is obligatory to do the wine tours as well.... In summary, I definitey recommend Altiplano Sp Sch. James - Dec 2011

Language Schools in Tarija Bolivia
by: Mike Mason

My partner Jen and I have been in Bolivia for almost 3 months now. The first 5 weeks were spent in Sucre, taking in the sights and taking Spanish lessons. There are many established language schools in Sucre, so it's easy to pick and choose.

We'd heard a few good things about Tarija, so decided to travel there. Warm people, good weather and wine....but nothing about language schools. We thought we were out of luck until I ran across the Altiplano Language School website.

I found Martin very professional to deal with. He and his wife, Luisa, run the school out of their very large apartment with one room dedicated as a classroom. What I appreciated about the school was their flexibility to accommodate our schedule and their attention to detail.

This school has only been around for a year, so doesn't have the established team of instructors that you'll find in Sucre. One teacher in particular, Noemi, was excellent. I felt my Spanish improved greatly under her keen, immersion style instruction.

It was a good experience all around. I think this school will only get better with time, experience and a polished team of instructors!
