In Santa Cruz grocery stores come in all sizes. There are small corner grocery stores throughout all neighborhoods that carry just the very basics (milk, bread, butter, yogurt, rice, sugar, eggs, detergent, toilet paper, soda, candies, etc.) so you can avoid a major shopping trip if you only need a few things. Slightly larger “corner grocery stores” are sometimes called pulperías. They may have a wider variety but are still part of the informal commerce system (read my
Bolivian sales tax
page for information on this). For the type of grocery store you may be accustomed to, head to a “supermercado”. These are like the ones in the US, Canada and Europe.
What should you know about the typical supermercado?
- all offer a wide variety of products - nearly anything you might want including many imported products; - all accept dollars (always $10s and $20s, usually no $50s and almost never $100s) and
Bolivian currency
alike; - all rotate their inventory on a pretty proper schedule and withdraw outdated products from their shelves (some do better than others - always check expiration dates); - all are part of the formal commerce system and can give you a receipt or invoice; - most also have smaller stores inside them such as small branch offices for various local
banks,
cosmetic or perfume boutiques, dry cleaners, pharmacies, cafés, etc.; - most have attached parking lots and most have a contracted or nearby
taxi
service that will pick you up or leave you off at the door. Supermarkets are more expensive than outdoor markets (the difference is minimal really), but you can rest assured the produce (especially the meat) is hygienic and not outdated. The following is a list of the branches of the three largest chains of Santa Cruz grocery stores. You will find all are conveniently located and there will very likely be one near your location. For those who are vegetarians or buy organic, try Naturalia:
