In the 1500's Potosi was the largest city in the world with a population of over 100,000 when Spain was colonizing the region and mining the Cerro Rico, a mine so rich in silver it was mined successfully until 1984. You can visit what remains of the Spanish Royal Mint here and take a tour of the very precarious mines. Potosi is also the highest city in the world, at 15,000 feet above sea level - the second highest city is
La Paz.
