Off the beaten track Bolivia....

by Stephanie Cleaver
(Brazil (Australian))

So just bought tickets to Bolivia for 3 weeks time! Very excited! I am travelling with a girlfriend and we are keen to experience Bolivia truely Bolivian style. I am not too excited for major tourist attractions and the things that everyone sees. I want to see a side of Bolivia that the tourists generally do not see. We will be flying into Santa Cruz and have an open itinary for 12 days, any suggestions?? PS Love the site- you have been book marked!

Cotoca Bolivia

If you go to Cotoca, just half an hour from the city of Santa Cruz you can visit the local potters and see them making all the pretty pottery that Cotoca is famous for. As you enter Cotoca you'll see a little round plaza with a big statue of a lady with some pottery. Beyond her is the town, but if you turn right instead of heading straight, there is a pottery shop about 1/2 block to your right and they make the pottery right there. The owner is sort of blond and has hazel eyes. She'll let you in and she'll call her potter and he'll show you the whole process from beginning to end. Then you can head into town and see the main square and visit the big church. It has beautiful gardens. Cotoca isn't known for much else but it's a nice 1/2 day trip. Easy to go in the morning and come back by lunch or stay for lunch there.

If you're interested in outdoor stuff, you could combine the other half day at the Jardín Botánico (Botanical Gardens) which is on the way to Cotoca along the right side of the highway or you could go to the Madre Selva (on the left side of the highway) which is a great outdoor restaurant and pool with excellent yummy Bolivian food typical to Eastern Bolivia. All of this is straight East of Santa Cruz and any taxi can take you. There are also tons of micros (buses) that go.

Other places most tourists don't know about:

Yvaga Guazú, OK actually most of our parks and gardens are not promoted.

Guarani Museum, and actually almost all of our museums and art galleries are not promoted in guide books and there are like 40!

Here's my list of 100 things to do in Santa Cruz.
