Newspaper, Magazine, TV and Radio Info

There are plenty of newspaper, magazines, radio and TV stations and other media resources to choose from. Locally, there are a good many sources of information. However, don’t expect to find an objective, impartial media anywhere in town as most newspapers, radio and TV stations are owned by the wealthy and historically, have always been closely bound to politics. Many of the same families who founded these media sources were/are involved in government and the media have long been used by political parties directly to support or advance their causes. And because university professors and students alike are highly politically active, most journalism students (who go on to be reporters) are neither taught nor well-versed in the art of objectivity.

On the other hand, Bolivian governments, knowing how politically influential the media can be, have often attempted to censor the means of communication used by their opponents. During the 1950's, the political party MNR established La Nación as the only official news organization. At other times, both civilian and military governments have harassed, jailed and even exiled journalists. Siles Zuazo's government was perhaps the first to honor its pledge to respect freedom of expression. Radio and newspapers were guaranteed freedoms that Bolivians had never enjoyed previously.

In addition, you have to constantly monitor the media, especially your TV set as the same laws do not apply here as in other countries and it is not uncommon to see full color photos of the dead and severely injured or near-pornographic scenes and content any hour of the day without regard for younger viewers. The same goes for newspapers and magazines which are sold at street corner newsstands in full view with no protective covering.

Do I know what a traveler needs, or do I know what a traveler needs?

If you don't have a Kindle, there are a couple of places in Santa Cruz that sell imported magazines and papers in English and other languages. You’ll find the best and most complete of these directly across from the Post Office on Junin Street, one block west of the central plaza (Plaza 24 de Septiembre).

Below is a list of the most widely read national and local media: newspapers, all of which can also be read online, major TV and radio stations also online, and a few interesting newsy type websites so you can take a peek before you arrive.

These are just some of the media available in Santa Cruz. There is an incredible variety available (19 local TV channels and over 80 international channels, 3 local dozens of national and international papers), but these are the most widely read and of better quality than most others. Unfortunately, most are in Spanish. Still, just taking a look will prove interesting and give you an idea of what the media are like here.

Bolivian Times is the nation's only English language newspaper and is geared to the foreign resident and business community. All the rest are in Spanish.

National TV channels, all in Spanish. See my section on basic services and utilities for cable or satellite TV hookup so you can enjoy shows in English.

Oye!! Now you can download and enjoy your favorite ENGLISH TV show episodes and movies right here at BELLA BOOKS!

You don't ever have to miss your favorite TV show again - and don't bother straining to read English subtitles at the movie theater again either! I've added the amazing UNBOX feature to my Bolivia Book shop just for my foreign friends who live in Bolivia and elsewhere overseas. You can also buy Bolivian CDs and download MP3s!

These websites are updated frequently and are a good source of news if you speak Spanish. I highly recommend taking a look at Epicentro Magazine. It's a beautiful bilingual magazine that I used to translate when it was in print. It is now being converted into a bilingual online magazine and it's still in the works but has some gorgeous photos of Bolivia you can take a look at already.

There are more than 200 radio stations in Santa Cruz, so I can't possibly list them all, but take a listen to some Bolivian radio stations online. (If you truly hate the music here, visit the No. 1 iPod download site: Click Here!)
