Leather mirror, 'Blue Tribute'
"The design of this mirror is meant to honor the art and customs of the Colla people," confide Peruvian artists Manolo and Lucho. The Colla date back to 1200-1450 A.D., and it was their custom to bury lords and priests in tall funeral towers called chullpas. "Some of the chullpas are square and others are more rounded, which is what we tried to recreate with tooled leather shapes," they explain.
Leather mirror, 'Peruvian Cantuta' (large)
Beautiful cantuta flowers blossom with the spirit of myth in a finely-tooled leather mirror frame. Manolo and Lucho recall the Inca legend of two kings who had a son each. The kings entered in bloody battle and on their deathbeds made their sons swear to continue the war, though they didn't want to. Bound by their pledge, they fought and mortally wounded each other, but before dying they asked their servants to put them on the field side by side. They forgave each other, which so moved Pachamama, Goddess of Fertility, that she allowed for the cantuta to blossom as a symbol of the people's unity. They bear the colors of the young kings red and yellow as well as green, symbolizing hope. Known as qantu in Quechua, the cantuta is Peru's national flower.
