International Baroque Music Festival of Bolivia 2010 Concert Schedule!
(Santa Cruz, Bolivia)
Two years of planning go into the 8th International Renaissance and Baroque Music Festival of the Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos, Bolivia, which begins on Earth Day 22 April and ends on 2 May, 2010. Over 800 musicians from over 15 countries will give 120 concerts in 13 towns during the coming 11 days.
It's an immense logistical feat (you wouldn't believe the lengths some of the European groups went to, get to Bolivia due to the volcanic ash that canceled their flights), and it's one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring cultural attractions Bolivia offers, covering over 1000 kilometers between the many towns participating. It all takes place in the department of Santa Cruz and is organized by APAC (Asociación Pro Arte y Cultura)
In the 12 Jesuit Mission towns of the Chiquitos region all concerts are free and its here where you'll have the best experience. There is nothing more incredible than to hear centuries-old music being played on centuries-old organs by young indigenous people much like when the Jesuits taught their ancestors 400 years ago. The music, played at the immense cathedrals built so long ago, carries through the dense Bolivian jungle.
At the local concerts in the city of Santa Cruz adults pay Bs. 50 admission and children under 16 years of age pay Bs. 20 admission. There is also a series of FREE concerts on Domingo Barroco (Baroque Sunday) the 25th of April. (See the free concert schedule below for these.)
This international festival takes place only once every two years so don't miss a chance to hear the gorgeous baroque music played by orchestras and choirs from all over the world this week, throughout the department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
We've posted the schedule of all concerts by day. Click on a date to see who is giving a concert, in which city or town, and at what time. Please note that it is subject to change.
Tickets are being sold in the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (the Modern Art Museum) just 5 blocks from the Plaza 24 de Septiembre on the corner of Sucre and Potosí where you can ask to be sure there haven't been any additional changes to the concert schedule.
