Am visiting for 1st time and for 3 weeks. Am 60 yrs old and worried about side effects of vaccine for yellow fever. Do I need it for Samaipata, where I shall be staying with friends in an orphanage? I do not intend to go into the jungle... it's all very confusing and will any malaria tabs do. Many thanks, Katherine.

Yellow Fever

Hi Katherine. I've lived in Bolivia for 7 years and made sure to get my Yellow Fever vaccine and certificate in order before I moved here. When I arrived, none of the customs officials paid any attention to it.
Since then, I have left and reentered the country countless times without it and never been asked about it.

However, I have heard of people who were refused entry at the airport for not having a certificate so my advice would be to get the vaccination.
As for Malaria, maybe someone else will disagree with me but unless you're going into the jungle, you won't need Malaria pills. I briefly lived in Yungas just north of La Paz and that area is Malaria Free.

Hope this helps.
