I am very anxious to see my friend. So you don't think I will have any trouble getting the visa at the airport. I have all the required documentation? Thank you again for all the information.

The Bolivian Consulate/Embassy in Washington DC has this website where you can see an online list of the things you were to have sent the consulate in order to get your visa from them.

Since you will be getting it at the airport, review the list to be sure you have everything with you when you fly. On their home page, click on the little link that says "Tourist VISA for United States Citizens".

p.s. A few little secret places to visit in La Paz plus the two best places to get photos of the city.

You're very welcome! The visa thing is new and was instated just 2 years ago - prior to that Americans didn't need one. There have been many changes and a lot of confusion but things have a way of always working themselves out. Have a wonderful trip!!

Come back and tell us about it! :-)

Thank you for your advice. I have traveled a great deal, but have never needed a Visa. This has been a great help.

Bolivia visa at the airport

If the Bolivian consulate itself told you they don't have visas at this moment (it's an official sticker that is usually sent to them from Bolivia) then you probably won't have any problem getting one upon entry. Perhaps the Bolivian consulate could send you a letter (or at least an email) that you could print out and bring with you so you can feel more secure about not having problems at the airport. Why don't you call them and ask them if they'd be willing to do that for you. Just for your peace of mind. I'm not sure they'll say yes. It's just an idea.

Getting a Visa at the airport

I am coming as a tourist to visit a friend. We contacted the Bolivian Consulate in the US and were told to get the visa at the airport, that they did not have any visas at the consulate.
We are coming in 2 weeks, so you can see our confusion.
Thank you

tourist or resident
by: BoliviaBella

Are you coming as a tourist or are you moving here? Americans in either case are supposed to request their travel visas from a Bolivian consulate in the United States and obtain it prior to arriving here.

But, we hear that in some cases they are being given the tourist visa at the borders and at airports upon arrival - this is because so many people are arriving without visas, having had no knowledge they needed one.

However, if you are planning to apply for residency in Bolivia and you arrive without a visa, they'll issue you a tourist visa at the airport and you cannot apply for residency if you enter on a tourist visa. For residency you are supposed to enter on a "visa de objeto determinado" (which in English we call a specific purpose visa).
