Bolivia's Only Woman President Dies at 89

Former Bolivian President, Lidia Gueiler, died today, at the age of 89. El Día, Santa Cruz, 09-May-2011: Bolivia's former president, Lidia Gueiler Tejada, passed away a few hours ago in the city of La Paz, due to a prolonged illness she was unable to overcome.

Gueiler Tejada was born in Cochabamba on 28 August 1921. She served as interim president of Bolivia from 1979 to 1980. She is the only woman president this country has had since the republic was founded (in 1825). She was a staunch defender of peace and gender equality.
