bolivia official languages now at least a dozen

(Santa Cruz, Bolivia)

Did you know that Bolivia now has at least a dozen official languages? The new Bolivian constitution, promoted by President Evo Morales, was approved through a national public referendum on Sunday, 25 January 2009. The new constitution states that as of this date, ALL native indigenous languages in Bolivia are to be considered Bolivia's OFFICIAL languages.

Bolivia previously had 3 official languages: Spanish, Aymara and Quechua. You can now add Guaraní, Ayoreo, and several others to that. If you can find a tribe with it's own language within Bolivian territory, it's official!
