Awesome BBC Documentary: Driving from Death Road to Potosí, Bolivia
Follow Phil and Marcus as they drive along the Bolivia Road of Death, known as the world's most dangerous road, in this BBC documentary. Phil and Marcus plan to drive from Coroico, located at about 2 miles above sea level in the tropical Yungas in the northern portion of the state of La Paz, to Potosí, home of Bolivia's famous silver mines, in Southwestern Bolivia at nearly 5 miles above sea level.
Tension builds as they drive past dozens of crosses marking points at which other deaths have occurred, and when they come upon a rescue working at a recent accident site. A member of the team tells them about a bus that recently went off the cliff killing 20, including U.S., Israeli and other foreign passengers. When asked for advice, he tearfully tells them "the danger is in the mind". Known locally as "Camino de la Muerte", dozens of people die on Death Road each year in Bolivia as cars, buses and trucks plunge over the edge of this road.
Their fear increases as darkness and fog close in...
The documentary continues through the city of La Paz and on to the Uyuni Salt Beds and Potosí. Watch as they pass isolated areas, local wildlife, protests and road blocks, an Army ambush against car thieves, and spend the night at a llama farm. It's tense, it's funny, it's completely worthwhile watching.
