American Airlines Bolivia
American Airlines Bolivia. In 1989 the company bought out Eastern Airlines routes to Central and South America, including Bolivia. With most flights to Bolivia originating in Miami, it has since become one of the most reliable airlines to use with very regular flights to Santa Cruz,
Cochabamba
and La Paz. There is no self-check in or curb-side check in for American Airlines at airports in Bolivia. When booking your ticket you can choose flights that enter through La Paz and then on to
Santa Cruz
and Cochabamba, or you can fly on one of American’s flights straight into Santa Cruz (I recommend this if it fits into your time table). The airport in
La Paz
is the highest airport in the world and first-time visitors often suffer from altitude sickness upon arrival (shortness of breath, headaches and nausea). It also tends to be very cold. You may have to disembark in La Paz and go through customs prior to re-embarking to continue on to Santa Cruz where you will likely go through
customs
again before exiting the airport. To get to Cochabamba you must go through La Paz or Santa Cruz first either way. Always check with the airline and/or your travel agent prior to your trip concerning issues such as government and
American Airlines baggage restrictions
(they differ at various times throughout the year); flight delays (frequent with AA) and cancellations (infrequent with AA, but they do happen); and any special assistance you might need during your flight or upon arrival.
Bolivian airports
are small, very basic and limited in terms of the services provided. Only Santa Cruz and La Paz have
immigration
offices. Always check with your travel agent and the Bolivian embassy or consulate in your country to make sure you have all the proper documentation for your flight to Bolivia. The following are American Airlines ticket sales centers and ticket counter hours in Bolivia. In addition, in Bolivia you can purchase tickets for flights to Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and La Paz at most Bolivian
travel agencies.
From my own experience, American Airlines Bolivia is one of the safest, most reliable, on-time airlines to use when traveling to Bolivia. Flights are rarely, if ever suspended or canceled due to an airline problem. If any are, it is due to special circumstances (usually this involves the Bolivian political situation). I've used American Airlines Bolivia many many times and have never had a problem with lost luggage, and rarely have experienced delays.
