Aerosur in Bolivia

Aerosur began operating as a national airline in Bolivia in 1992 and has since expanded its operations to include charter services and flights to some international destinations. Currently it is the largest airline in Bolivia (since Lloyd Aereo Boliviano went out of business in April 2007) and it continues to grow.

Aside from its numerous domestic destinations, the airline now also flies to Madrid (Spain), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Miami (Florida), Buenos Aires and Salta (in Argentina), and Asunción (Paraguay). Cuba, Venezuela and Mexico will soon be destinations offered.

Based out of Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz, it offers domestic flights between Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, La Paz, Cobija (Pando), Puerto Suarez (southeastern Santa Cruz) and Rurrenabaque (Beni), and small cities in between.

There is no self-check in or curb-side check in for this airline at airports in Bolivia. Always check with the airline and/or your travel agent prior to your trip concerning issues such as government and Aerosur baggage restrictions (they differ at various times throughout the year); flight delays (infrequent) and cancellations (also infrequent); and special assistance you need during your flight or upon arrival.

Bolivian airports are small, very basic and limited in terms of the services provided. Only major cities have customs or immigration offices. Always check with your travel agent and the Bolivian embassy or consulate in your country to make sure you have all the proper documentation for your flight to Bolivia.

From my own experience, this one of the best airlines serving Bolivia at this time. It is safe, reliable, punctual, its staff and flight attendants are professional and personable, and they are a well-organized, sure-to-continue-growing company. I’ve never had a problem with lost luggage, and rarely have experienced delays.
