Can Any Acai Berry Benefits Be Lost?
Some acai berry benefits can get lost during processing and it's important to question the manufacturing process of the acai berry juice or supplements you'll choose to consume to be sure you're getting the nutrients they really promise.
Acai berries are very fragile fruits and spoil easily. Therefore it's nearly impossible to export acai pure and whole. It has to be processed and transformed into a more lasting form prior to export from South America. Fortunately, the health benefits of acai berries can be preserved if processing is done carefully.
Acai berries are usually sold as juice, shakes and smoothies, as preserves, or in powdered form. The whole berries can be freeze dried carefully. Before using them, just soak them in water for a few hours.
Some manufacturers spray dry or heat dry the fruit. This is useless as it completely destroys the nutrients it contains.
It's always better to use pure acai. You can purchase it in powdered form or freeze dried if you can't get the whole fruit. The acai berry's flavor is very hard to describe and some don't find it pleasant, but mixing it with other things, as is so frequently done in all the "superjuices" that are being aggressively promoted, actually can degenerate it's nutritional qualities.
In addition, when mixed with other ingredients, always make sure acai is the top ingredient on the list - otherwise the product may contain so little acai you'd have to consume massive quantities of it to get any of its benefits.
A word on this however: acai is loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. In its pure form, you do not need to consume much of it to get great benefits. Since acai actually boosts your energy levels, it's better to start out slowly with doses lower than suggested on any packaging just to see how it will affect your heart rate and activity levels.
Additionally, it's better to stay away from products that mix acai with caffeine. You'll get enough or an energy kick from the acai alone and may get too much if mixed with caffeine.
Remember as well that acai contains a powerful appetite suppresant. So if you are NOT looking to lose weight, consume it in lower doses to begin with until you're sure what levels work for you.
